Why the Next Generation Must Learn Values Before Prompts

Artificial intelligence isn’t the biggest challenge facing the next generation.

People are.

Artificial intelligence doesn’t have an ethics problem—people do. As AI races into every corner of our lives, from classrooms and hospitals to social media and the workplace, the conversation has become fixated on what the technology can do instead of what it should do. During a recent presentation for the New Mexico Technology Council’s AI Education Series at NMU, I challenged students to look beyond prompts, chatbots, and deepfakes and consider the human values driving this revolution. AI has no empathy, no conscience, and no understanding of right or wrong. It simply reflects the data and intentions of the people who build it and the choices of those who use it. That reality places an enormous responsibility on the next generation. Whether it’s protecting personal privacy, recognizing algorithmic bias, resisting misinformation, or deciding when humans—not machines—should make critical decisions, ethics will ultimately determine whether AI becomes humanity’s greatest tool or its greatest mistake. The future won’t be written by algorithms alone. It will be written by people with the courage to question technology, demand accountability, and ensure innovation never comes at the expense of humanity. As AI continues to evolve at breakneck speed, our values—not our software—will define where we go next.
