Advocacy at the Local Level
I have often talked about Voices and Choices.
We have the option to choose what platforms to use and subscribe to based on their fair and ethical use of our data as well as use our voices to highlight and discuss the pros and cons of AI adoption and usage. A third aspect that is vital in an industry where Big Tech will not lead in the regulation fight, is to use our voices to rise up in advocacy to our local governments to create, support or sponsor AI Bills. One such local hero is Cris Moore, a professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is working on a bill in the New Mexico legislature, HB60. It focuses on AI being used to make life-altering decisions like hiring, lending, denying health care, etc. It doesn’t prohibit using AI in these areas, but it asks for some impact assessments from developers and deployers of AI if it’s being used for these purposes. It would require that they inform a consumer that an AI is being used, give them an explanation of an adverse decision, and give them an opportunity to appeal such a decision. I applaud his effort knowing that anyone, in any state, can write their local representatives and make a difference. Start somewhere. Cris is a guest on my Season 3 opener of my podcast RealmIQ: SESSIONS, which premieres on YouTube tomorrow night at 5pm pst. Catch it here.
